As a Class 'C' liquor license holder, it is illegal for us to give away free tastings or samples of any alcoholic beverage. Doing so would put us in violation of MLCC (Michigan Liquor Control Commission) code 436.2025. You can click on the following link and read the actual MLCC code here - http://legislature.mi.gov/doc.aspx?mcl-436-2025.
We do sell 'sample' size versions of our drinks so that you may try something before you buy a full size. We had have been accused by a gentleman visiting our restaruant of being too cheap to give away a small taste of wine or beer so that he may see if he liked the product before committing to buy an entire glass. Our story about it being illegal wasn't believed simply because of his experience of being able to get samples from many of the bars in town that he had visited. It was inconceivable to him that they would all be breaking the law so therefore it must be us being cheap and uncooperative.
I also think that the law is silly....I really do. Many of the things the MLCC doesn't allow us to do is completely ridiculous, especially when you compare what surrounding states bar can do. They know how to take the fun out of running a bar. However, the law is the law and we must follow the rules or run the risk of steep fines and/or possible loss of our license. It just isn't worth it.
